Roman

Salt was so important that the brine springs became the hub of the development of a regional road system.

At least two Romano-British farmsteads have been found in Dodderhill.

It is probable that the salt industry was administered from the Roman fort on Dodderhill and subsequently from the opulent villa nearby.

By this time the salt industry required an organised supply of food and fuel from the surrounding area.
