Stuart 1603 - 1714
Religious conflict continued into the Stuart period with some local families directly involved in the Gunpowder Plot.
New religious groups such as the Baptists and the Quakers became established in the area.
During the Civil War the area suffered at the hands of both the Royalist and Parliamentarian troops.
The ending of the Salt Monopoly in 1695 enabled some local people to become rich from the Salt industry while others were impoverished as a result.
